Developer email signatures: a terminal that types your name
Not everyone wants a flashy signature. A blinking cursor, a monospace name and a GitHub link is precise, a little dry and unmistakably yours.
Design my signature — freeReal output from the BylineSig engine, shown with example names. Each is an animated GIF inside email-safe HTML, the same thing you paste into your mail client.
Terminal-native
One of the three animation families is a terminal window that types `whoami` and prints your name and role. Dark by default.
GitHub, not just LinkedIn
Link the profile that matters for your work, as an icon, with no wasted space.
Plain email-safe HTML
A table, an image and some anchors. No scripts, no tracking pixels, no web fonts that fail to load. You can read the whole output in one screen.
What to put in a developer signature
- Name and role. “Staff Engineer, Platform” says more than “Software Engineer III”.
- GitHub, and a personal site if it has anything on it.
- Company, if you email people outside it.
- Leave out the phone number unless you want to be called.
- Leave out the PGP fingerprint unless your recipients will use it.
How it works
- Enter your details. Name and role, plus whichever of company, email, phone and links you want shown.
- Describe the feel. One sentence is enough. Pick a ready-made style instead if you prefer.
- Copy and paste. Install it in Gmail, Outlook or Apple Mail in under a minute. We host the animation.
Questions
How does the terminal animation work in an email?
Email clients strip almost all CSS and all JavaScript, so the animation cannot be done in HTML. BylineSig renders it server-side to a GIF with Remotion and wraps that in a small HTML table carrying the real links. The GIF is the only format every major client animates.
What happens in clients that do not animate GIFs?
Outlook 2019 and earlier on Windows show only the first frame. Every BylineSig signature is built so the first frame is the finished design, so those readers see a complete still. Current Outlook versions animate.
Can I get the raw HTML and GIF?
Yes. You can copy the HTML from the delivery step, and Pro lets you download the GIF and HTML files to host yourself.
